Falcon Trio Opens Competition at MWC Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Three members of the Air Force Track and Field team opened competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on Wednesday, May 12. Two Falcons completed the first five events of the men's decathlon, while one other participated in four events of the women's heptathlon.
Junior Caleb Pelger (Peabody, Mass.) is currently in seventh-place after five events of the decathlon, posting a combined score of 3,472 points. Highlighting the first day of competition was a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.20. Also contributing to his point total were marks of 21'4?" in the long jump, 35'11?" in the shot put and 6'0" in the high jump. Pelger also tallied a time of 51.23 in the 400-meter dash to conclude the first day.
The other Falcon representative in the decathlon is freshman Brian Walsh (Redlands, Calif.), who enters the second day of competition in ninth place, with 3,408 points. Walsh's top finish of the day was a sixth-place finish in the long jump, marking a distance of 21'10?". He also recorded a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.47. Walsh also tallied a time of 51.28 in the 400-meter dash, as well as a distance of 35'3?" in the shot put and a height of 5'10?" in the high jump.
Freshman Dierra Poland (Deptford, N.J.) is currently in seventh place after the first four events of the heptathlon with 2,845 points. Competing in just the second multi-event meet of her career, Poland tabbed a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53. She also recorded a distance of 35'6?" in the shot put and a height of 4'11?" in the high jump. Poland rounded out the day with a time of 27.00 in the 200-meter dash.
The decathlon and heptathlon conclude tomorrow (May 13) at the Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field on the campus of UNLV.
