Falcons Swept At Utah With 17-3 Loss

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Scoring in all but one inning, Utah swept a five-game series with Air Force with its 17-4 seven-inning win in Mountain West Conference baseball action on Mother's Day Sunday at Franklin Covey Field. The Utes improve to 20-27 overall, 10-13 MWC while the Falcons fall to 5-38, 0-19 MWC.
Utah broke open a 5-3 ballgame by scoring six runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Clay Westmoreland (3-5) got the complete game win--the fourth consecutive complete game tossed by the Utes--allowing six hits while fanning seven. Air Force starter Jeff Tetrault (1-4) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.
Utah had 17 hits in the game, with Jay Brossman and Tyson Olson with three hits each. Eric Chevalier scored four runs for the Utes.
Air Force had six hits in the game, with Jason Brown leading the way with two hits.
The Falcons struck first, scoring a pair of runs with four consecutive two-out base hits in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Travis Fugler tripled to the fence in center field and came around to score on Karl Bolt's double to right center. Brent Tittle then laced a single up the middle to score Bolt. Jason Brown then followed up with the fourth consecutive hit in the inning with a single through the right side.
The lead was quickly erased by Utah in the bottom half of the inning, as the Utes responded with three runs to take a 3-2 lead after one inning of play. Jared Pena's sacrifice fly to center scored Ryan Khoury for the first run. Mike Westfall then laced a ball up the middle that caromed off Air Force pitcher Jeff Tetrault's foot and into short left field for a two-run single, scoring Matt Ciaramella and Eric Chevalier.
The Utes made it 5-2 with runs in the second and third inning. Jay Brossman singled with two outs to score Nate Schlieman from second base in the second and Tyson Olson singled to score Chevalier in the third.
Air Force made it a 5-3 game with a run in the fourth. Jason Brown singled to right field and stole second base to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Geno Salazar smacked a two out single to left center to score Brown.
Utah broke the game wide open by scoring six runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 17-3 lead. The Utes had five hits in the fourth, three for doubles and had six hits in the fifth.
The Falcons return to action Fri.-Sat., May 14-16, against New Mexico at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque N.M.
