Falcons Conclude Friday Night Fights in Style

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force boxing team concluded its weekly Friday Night Fight contests with some stellar bouts on Jan. 21. There were 16 matches strongly contested bouts, as every boxer vied to make a name for themselves heading into the Wing Open Tournament.
"This was a great way to prepare for next month's Wing Open," head boxing coach Eddie Weichers said. "The bouts were exciting to watch and closely contested. Better pace and conditioning is evident, as the boxers all look stronger going into the third round. Plus, the high number of bouts that were decided by a split decision is evidence of the close, back-and-forth action seen in many of the bouts."
Senior Mike Sackenheim was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week, after earning a decision in the 170-pound bout against former Boxer of the Week, Joe Conrad. Using good movement, a stiff jab and accurate one-two combinations, Sackenheim was able to outpoint his opponent. Despite a hard-fought effort, Conrad was unable to find the elusive Sackenheim in the later rounds. The duo brought out the best in one another and could be a glimpse of the future, as the two are likely to meet again in the Wing Open Tournament.
Of the 16 bouts, just three ended before the final bell. Jay Page won a 180-pound bout when the referee called the bout in the third round, while Darren Smith (135-pounds) and Gary Cook (120-pounds) won their respective bouts after the referee stopped the contests in the second round.
Tyler Reese (227-pounds), John Butcher (154-pounds), Ian Tuznik (230-pounds), Oscar Casillas (206-pounds), Augustin Kamdem (179-pounds) and Brian Navin (137-pounds) all won their bouts by decisions, as did Blake Baldi (158-pounds), Cliff Moore (164-pounds), Rich Davis (157-pounds), Thad Ewing (181-pounds), Delwyn Campo (164-pounds) and Alex Johns (153-pounds).
The Falcons hit the road next weekend, when they travel to Seattle, Wash., to take on competition from other National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) schools. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 29.
