Falcons Hold Offensive-Minded Showcase during Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- It was an offensive-minded display as the Air Force boxing team hosted Friday Night Fights on Nov. 11 in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. The night featured 12 bouts, four of which were decided by the referee before the final bell. Junior Ronald Occenad earned Boxer of the Week honors following a victory in a 200-pound contest.
"It was a great night of competition," head coach Eddie Weichers stated. "We had worked all week on defense and slipping movers to get inside but when the bell rang, all bets were off. I think the crowd had a lot to do with the emotion. Many of the boxers had large cheering sections and the adrenaline level was high."
Jahmil Edwards got the evening started with a decision over Daryn Nelson in the first of three 153-pound bouts. In the night's other two contests at that weight class, Luis Pena claimed a decision over Marcos Gonzales, while Sean May took a victory from Ben Riccardi when the referee stopped the contest in the third round.
Nicholas Goc claimed a victory over Shawn Cuevas at 146 pounds, when the contest was stopped in the third round. Mark Ruther earned a decision over R. Ruiz at 171 pounds, while Rudy Bowen picked up a decision following a 157-pound match-up with Richard Davis and James Dunn decisioned Austin Almand at 163 pounds.
Chris Johnson picked up a unanimous decision over Matt Jensen in a 185-pound contest, while Bruce Jamison decisioned Jon Andresen at 180 pounds. Michael Bosack also claimed a decision at 180 pounds, as he defeated Elon Brumfield.
The outcome of both 200-pound contests were decided when the referee stopped the contest in the second round. Dustin Mayne topped Eric Garcia, while Occenad defeated Eric Schaar, en route to his Boxer of the Week award.
Occenad, or "Ox" as he is known by his teammates, was put to the test by a tough and talented opponent. In the early going, Occenad was able to keep Schaar away with several good jabs. Backed by good movement and strong ring presence, Occenad was earning the score with his combinations. A right uppercut caught Schaar on the nose and despite the work of the trainer, the referee called the contest.
"I was very impressed; not only with the talent but with the motivation," said former Air Force boxer and new assistant head coach Capt Erwin Vargas, who arrived at the Academy on Thursday. "There are a number of guys out looking for a (Wing Open) title."
Air Force continues its homestand with another round of Friday Night Fights on Nov. 18 in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
