Former Samford head coach Pete Hurt has agreed to come to the Academy as the offensive line coach, according to an announcement today by Air Force head coach Fisher DeBerry. Hurt will replace John Reagan, who left the Academy last week to become the offensive line coach at Kansas. Details of Hurt's contract are being completed and he is expected to begin work within the next few weeks.
"We are excited to welcome Pete into our football family! He brings great experience to our program having coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. Pete has been a head college coach, and we look forward to the ideas and innovations that he will bring to Falcon Football," DeBerry said. "He and his beautiful family are a perfect fit for the Academy."
Hurt led Samford to one of its most successful periods from 1994-2001, accumulating a 42-39-1 record. Hurt become the only coach in school history to lead the programs to five consecutive winning seasons and is the second-winningest coach in school history. Hurt's 42 wins trails only Terry Bowden, who had 45 from 1987-92. Hurt was the head football coach and athletic director at Clinton High School in Clinton, Miss., the last three seasons. He led Clinton to the 2002 district championship and the 2004 north state 5A finals.
Prior to his head coaching stint at Samford, Hurt was the defensive coordinator from 1993-94. Prior to that, he was the defensive line coach for the Birmingham Fire in the World Football League in 1991-92. His other collegiate coaching stops include Rice as the assistant linebacker coach in 1990-91, Lamar as the defensive coordinator from 1987-89 and defensive line coach from 1986-87, Baylor as the assistant offensive coach from 1983-86 and at Southeast Missouri State as linebacker coach in 1982-83. He began his collegiate coaching experience as the running back coach at North Texas from 1981-82.
In addition to his most recent high school coaching experience, Hurt was also the offensive coordinator at Clinton from 1980-81 and defensive coordinator from 1978-79. He is a 1974 graduate of the school and later earned his bachelor's degree from Mississippi College in 1978. Hurt also earned his master's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State in 1984.
