Air Force senior offensive linemen Jon Wilson and Ross Weaver, along with senior nose guard Russ Mitscherling were named team captains today by head coach Fisher DeBerry as the Falcons closed out spring drills with their final practice. The captains were voted on by their teammates, according to DeBerry.
Along with these honors, four other Falcons earned major awards following spring drills. The coaching staff started five new awards this season to honor players for their performances during spring drills. The Woody Award was given to sophomore Jared Baxley, who moved from safety to linebacker in the spring. The award goes to the player that came out of the wood work this spring and caught the eye of the coaching staff, according to DeBerry.
"We feel this player is one that will make a significant contribution to the team in the fall, based on his effort every day in spring practice," DeBerry said.
The Every Day, Every Play Award winner is freshman linebacker Marcus Brown. The award goes to the player who most demonstrated the team's motto for 2005 of Every Play, Every Day. Brown established himself as a starter during spring drills.
"Marcus was mentioned every day by our coaches as someone that gave it his all every play in practice," the coach said. "This is a guy the coaching staff can count on 365 days a year to give his all."
The final three awards handed out after practice today were the offensive, defensive and special teams most valuable player award. Freshman quarterback Shaun Carney took home the offensive honor while Mitscherling was named the top defensive player. Punter Donny Heaton won the special teams honor.
"Shaun improved every day in the spring and practiced with great intensity," DeBerry said. "Russ was dominant on defense the entire spring and Donny improved overall as a player and brings great athleticism to the punter position."
The Falcons closed spring drills today with a two hour practice that included about an hour of scrimmage. The Falcons open fall camp on Aug. 3.
