SEATTLE, Wash. -- Junior Willie Lloyd and senior Luis Pena picked up victories as seven members of the Air Force boxing team competed against National Collegiate Boxing Association programs at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Lloyd got the competition underway with a 112-pound victory over the Coast Guard's Rod Walker when the referee stopped the contest in the third round.
Boxing up a weight class, Pena won a unanimous decision over Gettysburg's Spencer Davidson, en route to his second Academy Boxer of the Week honor of the season. A usual 139-pound contender, Pena got work with Davidson at the higher 145-pound weight class. Using some stiff jabs against a good opponent, Pena was able to put some nice punches together in the second and third rounds for the unanimous win.
Five other Falcons competed at the Washington Athletic Club event, but were unable to record a victory. Senior James Baker and sophomore Brian Navin each dropped 135-pound decisions, as Baker was stopped by Nathan Wong of UNLV and Navin was decisioned by Todd Wilson of VMI.
Army's Reggie Smith topped senior Oscar Casillas at 185 pounds, while Nevada's Josh Sollinger earned a 173-pound victory over sophomore Bruce Jamison. Junior Mark Ruther rounded out the Air Force contingent, falling to Nevada's Francisco Torres in a 160-pound match-up.
The Falcons return to action next week, when 12 boxers take to the ring against NCBA foes at the El Dorado Hotel Ballroom in Reno, Nev. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m. (PST).
