16th-Ranked Air Force Wins Pair Of WWPA Games

Claremont, Calif. - Playing its final two regular-season WWPA, the No. 16 Air Force water polo team won both, defeating Chapman, 13-6, and Claremont, 10-8. With the wins, the Falcons improve to 12-15 overall and 8-5 in the Western Water Polo Association.

Air Force opened with a contest versus Chapman and took a commanding lead, going up 5-1 at the end of the opening period. With an 8-3 advantage at the half, the Falcons cruised to the 13-6 victory. Clark Condict (Jr., Irvine, Calif.), Alex Churnside (Fr., Orange, Calif.) and Kyle Schafer (Sr., Irvine, Calif.) all scored three goals each to lead Air Force, while Joey Brewer (So., Clovis, Calif.), Justin Berry (Jr., Windermere, Fla.), Jack Hines (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) and Jason Fung (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) added a goal each in the win.

Looking for its third straight conference win, Air Force took on Claremont in the last game of the afternoon. Again, the Falcons took the early lead, gaining a 2-1 advantage at the end of the opening period and a 4-2 lead at the half. However, the Stags were able to outscore the Falcons 3-1 in the third period to tie the contest at 5-5. Scoring five goals in the final quarter, Air Force was able to hold on for the 10-8 win.

Sophomore Tyler Hewko (Laguna Hills, Calif.) was the Falcons' leading scorer against Claremont, finishing with three goals, while Berry added two scores. Also getting on the board for Air Force were Brewer, Schafer, Danny Kimmich (Sr., La Jolla, Calif.), Blake Pickell (Sr., Santa Ana, Calif.) and Matt LeBlanc (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.). Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Denver Saunders (Roseville, Calif.) notched 11 saves for Air Force in the win.

The Falcons will return to action Nov. 17-19, when they travel to Claremont, Calif., for the WWPA Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer.
