Wing Open Tournament Gets Underway with Quarterfinal Bouts
2/15/2006 12:00:00 AM | Boxing
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- As the first bell of the afternoon echoed in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym, the Wing Open Tournament officially got underway. Twenty-eight members of the Air Force boxing team faced off with one another in seven different weight classes for the right to advance to the next round of competition in the annual Wing Open Tournament.
"It was another great night of Wing Open boxing," assistant coach Capt Erwin Vargas said following the meet. "Some of the boxers used great ring generalship and strategy to beat tough opponents with difficult styles, while others used sheer will and determination to push the attack; using good effective pressure to come up with the win."
Chris Johnson defeated Ben Golata with a unanimous decision in an early 185-pound showdown.
Nicholas Goc opened the 132-pound weight division with a decision over Adam Terns. James Baker and Kellen Griswold also advanced in the 132-pound division, as Baker's bout with David Simon was stopped in the third round and Griswold earned a split decision over Travis Miller.
All four spots in the 147-pound semifinal round were up for grabs during quarterfinal action. Rudy Bowen improved his perfect record (5-0) against Academy opponents, as he decisioned Shawn Cuevas. Ryan Price took a decision from Sean May to face Bowen next week. Jahmil Edwards earned a hard-fought decision from Richard Davis, while Daryn Nelson upended Nathan Liptak by a unanimous vote.
James Dunn won the only 156-pound decision of the night, defeating Victor McGuire with the unanimous approval from the judges.
Joe Conrad, last year's Wing Open runner-up at 165 pounds, easily advanced to the semifinals in that weight class after downing Jacob Lambach in a contest stopped by the referee in the second round. Conrad was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week for his impressive performance.
"He used good hard shots to the body in conjunction with a powerful jab to set up his opponent," Vargas said. "He followed up this good work with excellent combinations to the head and body culminating in a second round RSC."
In the other 165 pound contests, Ross Hopkin unanimously decisioned Justin Lee, while Ruben Ihuit collected a split decision from Victor Ditommaso. Mark Ruther, the team's final contender at 165 pounds won by a walkover.
Charles Cycon, making his first appearance in the competitive ring this season, earned a unanimous decision over Jon Andresen in the night's lone 175-pound bout.
The final three bouts of the evening featured the remaining 185-pound contenders. Three-time Wing Open finalist Oscar Casillas claimed a unanimous decision over Dustin Mayne to square-off with Johnson, the winner of the night's first bout. Ryan Cwynar downed Michael Tolzien in a referee-stopped-contest (second round) and Colin LaFavor unanimously defeated Elon Brumfield in the final bout.
The 2006 Wing Open Tournament continues next Wednesday (Feb. 22) with the semifinal round of competition. The winners from tonight's bouts will advance to the second round of action, joining 17 more boxers will make a statement for the right to take to the ring in the Wing Open Championships at Clune Arena on Friday, March 3.
