RENO, Nev. -- Following an action-packed night of quarterfinal action, five members of the Air Force boxing team advanced in the first round of competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association National Championships on April 6. The Falcons went 5-4 during the first day of competition in Reno, Nev.

Senior Jeremy Homan advanced in the 125-pound weight class after defeating Shippensberg's Nil Shah in the lightest of the weight classes that were contested by Air Force tonight. Classmate and team captain Luis Pena easily advanced to the next round of 139-pound action when the referee stopped his contest with James Shute of VMI in the first round.

Sophomore Clifford Moore and junior Joe Conrad both advanced in their respective weight classes by earning decisions. Moore improved to 11-1 on the season after defeating Kevin Ramirez of Army at 156 pounds, while Conrad decisioned John Campbell of Miami (Ohio) in a 165-pound match.

The night's final event winner, sophomore John Quinn, picked up a decision from Cal's Jarrett Bjur in a 195-pound bout.

Four other Falcons also competed in the quarterfinal round, but came up just short of advancing to the next round. Freshman Nicholas Goc's 132-pound bout against Todd Wilson of VMI was stopped by the referee in the second round, as was junior Jahmil Edwards' contest with Lock Haven's Jason Sanchez. Junior Evin Negron dropped a 175-pound decision to Navy's Joshua Sanborn, while senior Oscar Casillas lost a decision to The Citadel's Anthony Reynolds at 185 pounds.

After one day of national action that featured 17 programs from across the country, there are six teams within three points of one another. Air Force, Navy and UNLV are currently tied for the lead with eight points apiece, although Army is right on their heels with seven points. Host Nevada and Lock Haven are currently in third with five points each.

"It's a toss up," Air Force head coach Eddie Weichers said following the competition. "Any of these teams can step up and take this thing. It's a knock-down-drag-out battle. I think that Luis (Pena) led the way for us tonight. He was pumped up and ready to go. He looked like a champ tonight."

Action continues on Friday (April 7) with 24 national semifinal bouts. The first round will commence at 6 p.m. (PST) in the ballroom of the El Dorado Hotel in Reno, Nev.
