Falcons Stumble Against St. John'

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Poor attacking doomed the Air Force volleyball team in a 3-0 loss to St. John's on Friday, Sept. 1, during its second match at the William and Mary Invitational. The Falcons, who posted a .000 hitting percentage for the match, dropped consecutive 30-18, 30-12, 30-11 sets to the Red Storm.
Freshman Katie Batchelder and sophomore Kristina Stewart led the Falcons with five kills apiece, while freshman Michelle Harrington chipped in three. Batchelder earned the team's only ace, while also leading the team with six digs. Air Force used several rotations that consisted primarily of freshmen, as Hannah Sorber handled some of the setting duties to amass a team-high eight helpers.
St. John's used numerous runs throughout the match to take the three sets. Freshman Jocelyn Booker opened the scoring, but the Red Storm surged out to a 5-1 margin. The Falcons tied the set at six as Stewart provided a pair of kills. Stewart added another pair of strikes during the set and senior Tara Dunn picked up her first kill of the season, but Air Force succumbed to the 30-18 score.
The second set was much like the first, as St. John's served up numerous long scoring series to claim the 30-12 victory. Harrington collected a pair of kills in the third game, but Air Force was on the losing end of a 30-11 margin. St. John's hit over .520 in each of the final two sets to secure the three-game sweep.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow (Sept. 2) with a pair of matches at the William and Mary Invitational. Air Force will take on Stony Brook at 9 a.m., before meeting host William and Mary at 7:30 p.m.
