18th-Ranked Falcons Defeat La Verne, 14-3

USAFA, Colo. - The 18th-ranked Air Force water polo continued its roll at its own East Meets West Tournament, downing WWPA rival La Verne, 14-3. The Falcons improves to 6-4 overall, 4-0 in the WWPA, while La Verne falls to 3-2.
While both teams started out slowly, Air Force was first to get on board, as senior Kyle Schafer (Irvine, Calif.) scored on the assist from Clark Condict (Jr., Irvine, Calif.) with 2:37 left in the opening period. Two more Falcon scores-one by Danny Kimmich (Sr., La Jolla, Calif.) on the assist from Matt LeBlanc (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and another by LeBlanc-gave Air Force the 3-0 advantage after one period.
The Falcons' lead only continued to grow in the second period, as they outscored the Leopards 5-0, including a score by Schafer with just two seconds left on the clock. Leading 8-0 at the break, Air Force let its margin grow to 10 goals by the 2:43 mark in the third period. La Verne's first goal of the contest finally came with 1:11 remaining in the third on a score from Julian Czerwiec.
Sophomore Tyler Hewko (Laguna Hills, Calif.) put the Falcons up by 10 once more with a score early in the final quarter, but the Leopards answered with a goal from Sean Steele. Condict notched his first goal of the day with a five-meter attempt, while sophomore Kevin McDonald (Santa Ynez, Calif.) got on the board with his first score to give Air Force a 13-2 lead.
La Verne's last score came from Seth Shelton with 45 seconds remaining, and while that should have been the last goal of the game, the Falcons had one more response. From beyond the midway mark, freshman Jason Fung (Honolulu, Hawaii) managed to net his first score at the buzzer, giving Air Force the 14-3 win.
Schafer led the Falcons with four goals in the game, while Kimmich added three. Berry notched two goals, while Hewko, Condict, McDonald and Fung contriubuted the remainder of the goals. Meanwhile, every Falcon on the team saw action in the contest, including all four goalkeepers.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow with contests versus 19th-ranked Cal Baptist and 20th-ranked Brown.
