Falcons Fall to Stony Brook in Three Games

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game decision to Stony Brook at the William and Mary Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2, in Williamsburg, Va. Posting a negative hitting percentage, the Falcons dropped consecutive sets by 30-18, 30-24, 30-17 scores.
Junior Rebecca Gerton led the Falcons with eight kills, while freshman Michelle Harrington put down another five. Harrington also served up Air Force's only ace of the morning, while posting one of the team's two solo stops. Junior Kim Kallabis and freshman Hannah Sorber split time at the setter position, collecting assist totals of 10 and nine, respectively.
Gerton opened the scoring, as Stony Brook mishandled the attempt to continue her attack. Air Force was unable to use the momentum, as the Seawolves embarked on a seven-point run to take the lead for good. Sophomore Jasamine Pettie added a pair of kills, but Air Force found itself in a 23-9 hole. Air Force continued to fight, taking eight of the next 11 points. During that stretch, Harrington posted a solo block and Gerton added another pair of kills, but Stony Brook went on to collect the 30-18 win.
Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead, but Air Force pulled within two, behind kills from Gerton, Harrington, freshman Jocelyn Booker and senior Tara Dunn. The Falcons remained close, as Harrington and Dunn each added another kill. Sorber used a quick tip over to earn her first collegiate kill. SBU pulled the score to game-point, but Harrington was a part of three straight points as the Falcons pulled within five. In addition to posting up a kill, Harrington teamed up with Gerton for a pair of back-to-back blocks.
Freshman Danielle Mittelstadt opened the third set with a kill and classmate Jaclyn Fleming added another as the Falcons kept things close. Despite Harrington's ace and a kill by Dunn, the Falcons watched a 12-2 run by the Seawolves widen the point deficit to nine (17-8). Dunn, Gerton and Sorber each added another kill and freshman Kim Hammernik posted a solo block, but Air Force fell to Stony Brook by a 30-17 margin.
Air Force concludes action at the William and Mary Invitational this evening, as it faces the host Tribe at 7:30 p.m., in Kaplan Arena.
