LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game match to Wyoming on Thursday (Sept. 28) during a Mountain West Conference match-up in Laramie, Wyo. The Falcons succumbed to the Cowgirls with consecutive 30-6, 30-17 and 30-23 scores at the UniWyo Complex.
Wyoming used a long scoring stretch to open the set, pulling out to the early 8-0 lead. Sophomore Kristina Stewart posted a kill to put the Falcons on the board. The Cowgirls used another long run to maintain its lead. Junior Rebecca Gerton posted the Falcons only other kill as Wyoming rolled to the 30-6 victory.
Freshman Jocelyn Booker put down three kills in the second set, including the Falcons' first one of the set. Stewart chipped in another four, but Wyoming used several scoring spurts to maintain its lead. Ai Force held the Cowgirls at game-point while collecting a kill from Booker and a block from freshman Katie Batchelder and sophomore Jasamine Pettie.
A huge block by Booker tied the third set at one. Batchelder and Stewart accounted four the next five Air Force points, as Batchelder collected the first two kills and Stewart earned the next three. Junior Kim Kallabis recorded a service ace to pull the game within one at 8-7. Wyoming took eight of the next nine points to extend its lead, but Pettie posted a kill and assisted on a block to bring the Falcons to within four. The Cowgirls once again its lead, but Air Force continued to produce points of its own, behind a pair of assisted blocks. Batchelder teamed up with Booker on one block, before helping classmate Michelle Harrington with another. Sophomore Ellen Bina collected a block to pull the Falcons within five once again, but despite a pair of kills by Stewart, Wyoming took the third game 30-23.
Stewart led all Falcons with 12 kills. Kallabis, who led the team with 18 assists, also recorded a team-leading eight digs, while Batchelder earned a defensive tally on seven. Kallabis and Bina accounted for the Falcons two aces.
The Falcons return to the Academy next Friday (Oct. 6) to host MWC foe Colorado State. Due to a home hockey game, the Falcons' volleyball match with the Rams is slated to begin one hour earlier than usual, as the first serve will take place at 6 p.m., in Clune Arena.
