Air Force Hosts Season-Opening All-Comers Meet

The Air Force track and field team kicks off the 2007 season on Saturday, Jan. 13, with the annual Air Force All-Comers Meet. The field events start at 10 a.m., with the women's weight throw and men's pole vault, while the track events are slated for a noon start with the women's mile. Both the track and field events will continue on a rolling schedule.

RETURNING RECORD HOLDERS
The Falcons return five Academy record-holders to this year's roster. During the last indoor season, Brian Walsh tallied a program-best score win the MWC heptathlon, while Olivia Korte improved her own weight throw record. During the outdoor season, Dierra Poland shattered the 100-meter hurdles record, while Travis Picou clocked Academy-best marks in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. BACK FOR MORE
Brian Walsh and Travis Picou both competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2006 and hope to return this season. Walsh placed 13th in the heptathlon, while Picou recorded the same spot in the 200-meter dash. In addition to the two indoor national qualifiers, Olivia Korte earned All-America honors in the discus during the outdoor championships.
LEADING THE WAY
Five members of the squad were elected to serve as captains of the 2007 team. Representing the men's squad, Nick Luina returns for his second season as a co-captain. He will be joined by Richard Elmore and Matt Schwandt. On the women's side, Dierra Poland is back for another season of captaincy, this time serving alongside Caitie Holliday.
STILL EARNING HONORS
Two-time national javelin champion and 2006 Academy graduate 2Lt. Dana Pounds was selected as one of five Colorado Athletes of the Year, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame announced on Jan. 9. In addition to Pounds, four other individuals will be recognized as the state's top athletes. Denver Broncos' cornerback Champ Bailey headlines the group that also includes DU Hobey Baker winner Matt Carle,
