The Air Force men's tennis team opened its 2007 spring season Saturday with a 7-2 loss to NAIA team Point Loma Nazarene in California. Seniors Robby Alexander and Ryan White posted singles victories for the Falcons, who continue their West Coast road trip on Sunday, Jan. 14 against UC Riverside.
It was only the second time in 17 chances that Point Loma has defeated the Falcons. Point Loma opened the match with wins at all three doubles positions, including an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot by Christian Gerloff and Jonathan Bowman over Alexander and White.
Alexander avenged his doubles loss by downing Gerloff at the No. 1 singles slot, 6-7, 7-5, 10-2 as they played a super-tiebreak to decide the third set. White, meanwhile, defeated Cassidy Crail in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
PLNU won the other four singles matches, including two that went three sets. Bowman downed Falcon freshman Brett Rodgers at the No. 2 spot, 7-6, 5-7, 12-10, while Craig Johnson won the No. 4 match over Air Force senior Keith Cronican, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
