Falcons Win Pair of Home Matches

The Air Force women's tennis team won a pair of matches Friday at the Academy, defeating South Dakota State, 7-0, and Eastern Washington, 4-3. The Falcons improved 2-1 this season and host two more matches on Saturday, against Southern Utah (11:30 a.m.) and Colorado College (3 p.m.).
Air Force did not drop a set in its morning match against South Dakota State. The Falcons swept all nine matches, including an 8-1 drubbing by senior Karissa Walker and junior Lauren Wilson over Kristine Hagedorm and Jen Sondreal at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Wilson kept the momentum going by defeating Sondreal, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. It was her first career match at the No. 1 singles position. Sophomore Christine Abayan downed Kate Wylie by the same score at No. 2 and the other four singles matches were also won in straight sets.
In the afternoon match, Air Force won all three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests. Abayan played at the No. 1 singles spot and beat Casey Knox, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Sophomore Meghan Kiser also won in three sets over Rachel Berger, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. Junior Erika Shortridge and senior Kelly Morgan won at No. 45 and 6, respectively.
"We saw a lot of growth in both the singles and doubles today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "In the match against Eastern Washington we swept the doubles in three very close matches and in singles it was the best job of fighting I have seen all year long."
