USAF Academy, Colo. - Despite a strong showing in the second game, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to TCU to open the second half of the Mountain West Conference season. The Falcons hit a match-high .222 in the second set, while holding the Horned Frogs to its lowest attacking total of the night. Overall, the Falcons fell by 30-14, 30-25, 30-15 scores.
Sophomore Katie Batchelder led the Falcons with eight kills, while freshman Nichole Stilwell accounted for seven. Stilwell also led the squad with a .462 hitting percentage, as she connected on seven of 13 attempts, while committing just one error. Classmate Caroline Kurtz posted a match high 11 digs, while Batchelder accounted for 10.
Senior Kim Kallabis accounted for 12 assists, while freshmen Stephanie Stanford and Jessica Hellmann added 11 and six, respectively. Sophomore Michelle Harrington accounted for the Falcons' lone solo block, while Batchelder and Stilwell teamed up for an assisted stop.
After a shaky start to the second set that saw the Blue and Silver in an early 13-4 hole, Air Force slowly climbed back into the mix. With Kurtz at the line, Air Force forced the Frogs into numerous attacking errors and brought the score to within 20-16 on back-to-back Batchelder kills. With the score favoring TCU at 28-20, the Falcons responded with five straight points (28-25) behind kills from Kurtz, Harrington and sophomore Jocelyn Booker.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow night (Friday, Oct. 19), when they host New Mexico at Clune Arena. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
