Two goals in the 88th minute propelled the 24th-ranked University of New Mexico men's soccer team a 2-0 victory Friday evening over Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Justin Davis and P.J. Wilson each scored as the Lobos improved to 12-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the MPSF, while the Falcons fell to 4-12-1 and 2-6 in conference play.
The Falcons, looking to avenge a 6-0 loss to UNM earlier this season in Albuquerque, N.M., kept pace with the Lobos until Davis scored the game-winner with 2:38 left. Michael Reed started the play with a free kick that found Chris Wright at the far post. Wright headed the ball to the front of the net where Davis laid out in between two defenders and placed a header by Air Force goalie Brian Guyette for his fifth goal of the season.
The Lobos added an insurance goal just 24 seconds later when Wilson found himself on a 2-on-1 situation with teammate Dominique Romero, who fed Wilson for shot that beat Guyette from 10 yards out for his fifth goal of the campaign.
Despite being outshot 22-6 in total shots and 10-1 in shots on goal, the Falcon defense played well in front of Guyette, who made eight saves, including three spectacular stops within an eight-second span about 15 minutes into the game.
UNM goalie Mike Graczyk saved the only shot on goal he saw, a rocket from 25 yards by Falcon sophomore Kevin Rosser midway through the first half. UNM also held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Falcons host UNLV on Sunday, Nov. 18, in the final game of the 2007 season. The team will honor the six seniors prior to their final collegiate game. Guyette, Andy Nigro, Jason Belvill, Ian Huck, Chris Mathews and Steven Locker will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
