The Air Force Academy rifle team was host to the 2007 NCAA Qualifier and NRA Sectional match against UTEP on Feb. 10. The NCAA Qualifier was the final match of the season used to determine the teams that will be selected to compete in the NCAA Championships at University of Alaska-Fairbanks on March 9-10. Only the top eight schools advance to the NCAA Championships. On Saturday, UTEP led the Falcons by 91 points to win the match 4583-4492.
The Falcons shot a score of 2200 in smallbore and 2292 in air rifle. The Miners shot a 2257 and 2326 in air rifle. This is the third time this season that the Falcons fell to the UTEP Miners. Air Force was ranked 16th in the nation going into this match.
According to acting head coach Lt Col Bill Roy, "The NRA Sectional is a "postal" match in which all participating schools mail in their scores to determine winners in the smallbore and air rifle events."
AFA senior Jessica Palomba was the top aggregate shooter with a 574 X 600 in air rifle, and a 555 X 600 in smallbore. This is the third consecutive meet in which the team captain was the leading shooter for the Falcons.
The Falcons' next and final match of the season is at University of Nevada-Reno, Feb. 24.
