The Air Force Academy Fencing team is heading for the NCAAs. The fencing team has four fencers who qualified for the 2007 NCAA Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships, March 22-25, in New Jersey. Junior Eliza Enyart from Bend, Ore. is making her third trip to the NCAAs. Freshman Peter French, Austin, Texas, is following in his older brother Tim's (class of 2006) footsteps, with his first trip to nationals. The group qualified for the NCAAs at the West Region tournament on March 10. Enyart won the women's epee tournament, while French finished fourth in men's epee. Senior Nathan Smith, who finished fourth in foil, will also compete at the nationals as will freshman Michael O'Connor in sabre. O'Connor was AFA's third-place finisher at the West Region tournament.
"Both Eliza and Peter had a very strong season. They are fencing very well in both NCAA tournaments and national North American Cup tournaments," said assistant coach Adam Skarbonkiewicz. "I am looking forward to seeing them compete during the NCAA finals."
This is Air Force's ninth consecutive season under head coach Abdel Salem that the Falcons have gone to the NCAA Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships. CBS Sports will produce a seasonal highlight special for the NCAA Winter Championships. The hour-long show will air on May 5th and will include coverage of the NCAA Fencing Championships.
