SAN DIEGO - The 68th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team opened its 2007 Mountain West Conference slate on Friday with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Air Force Academy in a neutral-site clash at Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs claimed all three doubles matches and dropped just one set in singles action en route to their second straight shutout. With the win, SDSU improves to 7-8 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Falcons drop to 9-8 and 0-2 in the MWC.
The Aztecs got off on the right foot in doubles play as the duo of Kathryn Kitts and Milana Yusupov upended Air Force's Erlyn Rudico and Meghan Kiser, 8-3, at the No. 3 position. Shortly thereafter, Holly Bagshaw and Sisse Nielsen secured the point for the Scarlet and Black with an 8-5 triumph over Karissa Walker and Lauren Wilson at the No. 2 spot. SDSU then wrapped up the sweep when the tandem of Eliska Krausova and Alesya Vidov survived a close call against Kelly Morgan and Christine Abayan, 8-6, on the No. 1 court.
The Aztecs kept the momentum in singles competition as five of the six encounters were completed in straight sets. Krausova made quick work of Wilson with a 6-0, 6-1 effort at the No. 1 position, while Vidov won her fourth match in a row after disposing of Abayan, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. SDSU subsequently clinched its ninth straight victory over Air Force in as many tries when Bagshaw engineered a 6-1, 6-3 conquest of Morgan at the third spot.
Over on the No. 4 court, Cadua was also a winner in her fourth straight outing after pinning a 6-1, 6-2 defeat on Morgan, while Nielsen stormed to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Walker at No. 5. With the Aztecs out in front 6-0, the only remaining drama took place in the No. 6 position where freshman Ozge Atalay rallied from an early deficit against Rudico to win, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 in a super-tiebreaker.
Air Force resumes its conference slate on Sunday, March 25 when it tangles with UNLV in Las Vegas. The Falcons will also play Southern Utah on Sunday.
