WOODLAND, Calif. - Air Force junior Greg Stine (Houston, Texas) was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced today (March 6). It is the first such honor for Stine who, in just his second week back in the Falcons' rotation after an injury, had a pair of stellar competitions in back-to-back meets at the Peter Vidmar Invitational and the Southwest Cup.
Leading the team on the floor exercise (8.700), still rings (8.800) and vault (8.700) at the Peter Vidmar Invitational in Los Angeles, he guided the squad to its best team finish in over two years (192.300). The very next night in Tempe, Stine finished second on the floor exercise with a score of 9.000, becoming just the second Falcon to reach the nine-point plateau this year. In addition, he placed third on the vault (8.600) and tied for fourth on the high bar (8.200).
Stine shared the weekly honor with Stanford's Bryant Hadden. In the eighth week of the season, the duo became the first gymnasts from a program other than Oklahoma or Nebraska to claim MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors.
For the second straight weekend, the Falcons will compete in a pair of meets. Air Force will travel to Chicago, Ill., for competitions with the UIC Flames on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
