RENO, Nev. - Two members of the Air Force boxing team won their quarterfinal bouts during the first session of competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Championships on Thursday, April 12, in Reno, Nev. Freshman Matt McPhail and sophomore Nicholas Goc each advanced to the next round of action following referee stopped contests.
Three Falcons took part in the day's first session, which featured 15 bouts ranging from 119 pounds to heavyweight. McPhail opened the scoring with a strong showing against Kentucky's Levi Anderson at 125 pounds. Keeping his opponent against the ropes for much of the bout, McPhail was able to secure a victory when the referee called the bout in the third round.
Freshman Alexander Shin represented the Falcons at 132 pounds, dropping a controversial decision to Mansfield's Jarrett Hill. Although he seemed to out-hit his larger opponent, Shin fell just short on the judge's scorecards.
Goc closed out the afternoon session with a victory over Jamyle Cannon of Kentucky in the first of two 139-pound bouts. After learning his opponent's tendencies in the first round, Goc applied continued pressure throughout the final two rounds and caused the referee to stop the contest in the third round.
Action continues this evening, when four more Falcons take to the ring at the El Dorado Hotel Convention Center. Second round action begins at 6:00 p.m. (PST).
