USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force volleyball team opened the Mountain West Conference season with a 3-0 loss to Wyoming on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Academy. Despite freshman Caroline Kurtz's team-best nine kills and nine digs, the Falcons fell in consecutive 30-17, 30-25, 30-24 sets.
The youngest set of Falcons led the team in every statistical category, providing a positive glimpse into future. In addition to Kurtz's team leading totals in the kills and digs, classmate Nichole Stilwell posted a match-best five blocks and .833 hitting percentage (connecting on five of six attempts, while committing no errors).
Freshman Jessica Hellmann, who served as the team's setter for the final two games, posted a career-best 22 assists, while classmate Stephanie Stanford was one of two Falcons to record a service ace. (Senior Rebecca Gerton was the other).
The Falcons head to Prairie View, Texas, for the Lady Panther Invitational on Sept. 14-15. Air Force will compete in four matches during the two-day tournament, taking on Texas-San Antonio, Texas Pan-American, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
