Air Force Falls in Four to UT-San Antonio

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Senior setter Kim Kallabis moved into 10th on the Air Force volleyball all-time assist list, while the Falcons dropped a four-game set to Texas-San Antonio on Friday, Sept. 14, in Prairie View, Texas. In their first match of the Lady Panther Invitational, Air Force dropped the first two sets (30-23, 30-27), rebounded to win the third game (30-27), but ultimately dropped the fourth with a 30-17 score.
Kallabis moved into 10th on the Academy's all-time career assist list with her sixth helper of the day. In all, Kallabis collected 23 assists to hold a career tally of 1093.
Sophomore Michelle Harrington accounted for the Falcons' first two kills of the match and freshman Stephanie Stanford added a service ace to give the Falcons a 5-3 lead. Freshman Caroline Kurtz and sophomore Katie Batchelder added kills, but UTSA tied the set at seven. Freshman Nichole Stilwell added a kill and assisted on a block with junior Jasamine Pettie, but the Roadrunners kept the Falcons at 12, while scoring six straight points to take 15-12 lead. UTSA continued on to a 24-16 lead, but Stilwell and Kurtz combined for four kills, while Pettie and Harrington added a block. Freshman Kelly Spencer, serving as the starting libero for the second straight match, served up an ace, but Texas-San Antonio took the 30-23 game win.
Batchelder tallied the Falcons' first point of the second set. Following an error by UTSA and a block assisted by Kurtz and Stilwell, the Falcons took a 3-2 lead. Batchelder posted three straight kills to give the Falcons a 13-12 lead. Kurtz added another pair of kills to keep the Falcons ahead, 15-13, but UTSA responded with five straight points. Air Force pulled within one at 19-18, but the Roadrunners responded with a 4-0 run. Batchelder recorded back-to-back kills, while Stilwell added another to bring the Falcons within two at 23-21. Batchelder, Pettie, Stilwell and Kurtz recorded kills, but UTSA took the game by a 30-27 margin.
Air Force earned kills from Batchelder, Harrington and Kurtz to start the third, but Texas-San Antonio took the early 9-6 lead. The Falcons tied the game at 11 and took a 15-12 lead, behind several UTSA errors and aces from seniors Rebecca Gerton and Morgan Dolan. Kurtz added an ace of her own to keep the Falcons' lead at 17-16. Kills from Kurtz accounted for four of Air Force's next five points, while another ace from Gerton gave the Falcons' a 26-21 lead. The Roadrunners pulled within two, but another kill from Kurtz helped guide the Falcons to the 30-27 victory.
In the fourth set, Air Force took the early 2-0 lead and Batchelder helped tie the game at three. Stilwell and Stanford teamed up for a block that tied the set at seven. Junior Kristina Stewart added a pair of kills, but UTSA rolled out to a 13-9 lead. Stilwell added another kill, but Texas-San Antonio moved out to a 19-11 lead. Kurtz, Harrington and Stilwell added kills, but the Falcons ultimately dropped the set by a 30-27 score. Air Force continues action at the Lady Panther Invitational this afternoon in Prairie View, Texas, when it faces Texas Pan-American at 3:30 p.m.
