The Air Force women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at two separate tournaments Friday. Two players are at the Maryland Invitational, while the rest of the roster is at the Scarborough Specialties Open, hosted by Texas Tech.
Seniors Lauren Wilson and Erika Shortridge won their first doubles match at the Maryland Invite, defeating Brittany Barskyl and Ivana Petrich, 8-5, before falling in the second round to Heather Bybee and Dunja Djuranovic of Auburn, 8-5. The duo will face Mary Crider and Elena Vahl of Villanova in the consolation round.
In singles play, Shortridge won her first-round match in flight D, downing Kristen Mueller of Delaware, 6-4, 6-2, and will play Racquel Wagner of Missouri in the second round. Wilson, meanwhile, dropped her first match in flight B, 6-4, 6-2, to Elena Berry of Delaware.
At Texas Tech, junior Christine Abayan pulled off the upset of the day by defeating the tournament's top seed, Samantha van der Drift of Texas Tech, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round of the top singles flight. Abayan lost in the semifinals to Nadia Solomon, 6-2, 7-6 of North Central Texas College and will play in the third-place match on Saturday.
A pair of freshmen rallied from match points down to win singles matches on Friday. Christen Monreal saved five match points to defeat Lainy Chafitz of Texas State, 4-6, 6-4, (15-13) in the consolation round of the "Grey" bracket, while Sarah Cassman saved four to beat Sarah Burton of Texas-Pan American and advance to the finals of the "Green" flight.
In doubles action, Monreal and junior Meghan Kiser won their first-round match, as did Cassman and freshman Samantha Sarkis.
