Falcons Swept By UNLV in Dual Action

Las Vegas, Nev. - Back in conference action, the Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams each fell to UNLV Saturday at Buchanan Natatorium. The men, dropping a 176-123 decision to UNLV, fall to 3-5 overall, 0-2 in the MWC, while the women are 2-8, 0-5 in the conference after a 149-117 loss to the Lady Rebels.
In the men's competition, Air Force took first place in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Kai Yamashiro (Jr., Kaneohe, Hawaii), Justin Day (Jr., Peyton, Colo.), Chris Morin (So., Crown Point, Ind.) and T.J. Cowling (Sr., Newport News, Va.) clocking a season-best time of 1:31.52.
Junior Bryan Avery (Mililani, Hawaii) was the lone Air Force swimmer to earn a first place finish, winning the 200 free with a mark of 1:41.17. Avery also took second in the 100 free, recording a time of 46.61 in his first time swimming the event this season, while taking third in the 100 butterfly.
Day notched a pair of second place finishes, taking second in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Freshman Josh Hammervold (Sugar Land, Texas) took third in the 100 breast, while junior Spencer Butt (Sterling, Va.) finished third in the 200 breast.
Yamashiro brought home two second-place finishes, taking second in both the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. He also finished third in the 100 back with a season-best mark of 51.78. Meanwhile, Benjamin Gunn (Fr., Gainesville, Ga.) placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 back. Cowling also registered a second place finish in the 50 free, while placing third in the 100 free.
Registering third-place showings were Eric Robinson (Fr., Lakewood, Colo.) taking third in the 200 freestyle, Sean O'Keefe (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) finishing third in the 1650 free, Nick Dixon (Jr., Canton, Mich.) placing third in the 200 fly and senior captain Spencer Liedl (Neenah, Wis.), who finished third in the 200 IM.
For the divers, Kyle Van Valkenburg (So., took first-place in the 1-meter dive with a season-best mark of 274.94, while finishing second in the 3-meter dive. David Arlington (So., Eagle River, Alaska) took third in the 1-meter, while Randy Rogers (Jr., Fort Worth, Texas) finished third in the 3-meter dive with a season-best score of 237.08.
On the women's side, junior Jane Hwang (Irvine, Calif.) was the Falcons' top performer, registering three second-place finishes. Hwang finished second in both the 100 and 200 freestyle races, as well as the 200 IM. Meanwhile, freshman Kaeli Kluesner (Denver, Colo.) also recorded a pair of second-place finishes. In her first appearance in the 200 butterfly this season, Kluesner recorded a mark of 2:15.08 to take second, whil also placing second in the 200 back. Also registering a top-three finish for the Air Force swimmers was freshman Caitlin Teresky (Newtown, Pa.), who came in third in the 1000 free.
For the divers, Ashleigh Peck (Jr., Beaver Falls, Pa.) took second in the 3-meter dive, while teammate Danielle Dowds (Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) placed third in both 1-meter and 3-meter events.
The Falcons return home this week, Jan. 24 and 26, for a pair of conference dual meets as they host BYU and Utah, respectively.
