USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - In their only Wednesday night appearance of the season, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a straight-set match to BYU on Oct. 22, at the Academy's Clune Arena. Despite their second-highest single-set score of the season, the Falcons dropped 25-17, 25-23 and 25-10 sets to the visiting Cougars.
Air Force was led by sophomore Caroline Kurtz, who paced the Falcons in kills, hitting percentage and digs. She recorded six kills and a.067 hitting percentage, while adding seven digs to her stats. In fact, Kurtz's seven digs was tied for the second-best defensive mark on either side of the night.
Freshman Jasmine Sapp posted the first two service aces of her career to lead the Falcons in that category. Classmate Victoria Martinez, sophomore Stephanie Stanford and junior Michelle Harrington each added a single ace. Those five aces are tied for the Falcons' best single-match production in conference action this season.
In addition to her service ace, Martinez added six digs to the Falcons' total of 28. Those six digs moved Martinez into seventh place on the Falcons' Division I single-season digs list (235). Sophomore Nichole Stilwell led the team with three assisted blocks. Classmate Jessica Hellmann collected 10 of the team's 20 assists, while fellow sophomore Stephanie Stanford added seven.
The Falcons' best set of the night was the second, where Air Force scored its second best total of the season in Mountain West play. Their 23 points, backed by a .154 team hitting percentage, is second only to the 25 Air Force put up on Wyoming during their 25-22 victory back on Oct. 4.
The Falcons remain at the Academy on Saturday, Oct. 25, hosting Utah at 7 p.m.
