Chris Bettencourt scored two goals and added an assist and Blake Nunez had a goal and two assists Friday night to lead the Sacramento State men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Hornets improved to 7-6-2 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Falcons fell to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Bettencourt broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute when he fired a shot past Falcon goalie Jim Gullo from 12 yards out after receiving a pass from Nunez. Bettencourt then returned the favor in the 60th minute, finding Nunez behind the Air Force defense with a nice pass and Nunez beating Gullo from 18 yards out.
Bettencourt made it 3-0 with just over five minutes remaining after taking a centering pass from Nunez and finding an open net after Gullo was caught out of position after an earlier crossing pass.
The Falcons had some prime scoring opportunities, including a rocket from junior Steven Noller midway through the first half that just missed the net and a direct kick from junior Kevin Rosser that grazed the crossbar with 17 minutes remaining in the second half.
Sacramento State goalie Ryan Kenny saved all five of Air Force's shots on goal, including two each by sophomore John Tilton and freshman Ben Chavez. Gullo made three saves for Air Force before being pulled with five minutes left for sophomore Patrick Gould.
The Hornets held a 12-11 advantage in total shots and had six shots on goal. Air Force had five corner kicks, compared to four for Sacramento State.
The Falcons play their final home game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 2 against San Jose State beginning at 1 p.m.
