USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Junior Michelle Harrington did a little bit of everything for the Air Force volleyball team during its final home match of the 2008 season on Saturday, Nov. 15. Despite Harrington's strong, team-leading, performance, the Falcons dropped a 3-0 match to TCU in Mountain West Conference action. The Falcons fell 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 to the visiting Horned Frogs.
Harrington led the Falcons in kills and hitting percentage, as she connected on 11 of 23 attempts. She committed just one error for a .435 hitting total. Her 11 kills tied for the third-highest total by the Falcons during any conference match this season, while her hitting percentage is second.
The junior also paced the Falcons with a pair of service aces and a pair of solo blocks. The two aces are tied for the second-most in a match for Air Force this season and with her two solo stops, Harrington moved into a tie for 10th on the program's Division I single-season list. She ties the 17 stops she first accounted for last year.
Sophomore Jessica Hellmann, starting her second straight match, accounted for 23 assists. That is the tied for the best single-match output in conference action since Sept. 20. Freshman Victoria Martinez continued to move up the Falcons' single-season digs list, as she added a team-high nine to her total. Martinez, in just her first season, has 278 digs on the year and is just 10 shy of cracking the Division I top-three.
The Horned Frogs used a quick 6-1 start to propel themselves to the 25-16 lead in the first set, while attacking woes plagued the Falcons in the second set. Backed by several long scoring streaks in the opening minutes, TCU doubled up the Falcons at 16-8. Down 24-12, Air Force held TCU at set-point while they accounted for five straight points behind the serving of senior Kristina Stewart.
The third set saw Air Force claim the first point off of a kill from senior Jasamine Pettie. TCU took a 6-2 advantage, but Air Force rallied to tie the set at 11. The Falcons took a two-point lead, but the Frogs responded and the two teams traded ties for the next several points. TCU advanced the score to 24-20, but the Falcons pulled within two until an error gave the Frogs the 25-22 win.
The Falcons close out the 2008 season next weekend with a pair of road trips to San Diego State (Nov. 20) and UNLV (Nov. 22).
