Falcons Go 2-1 on Opening Day of Anteater Shootout

IRVINE, Calif. - In a four-team competition, the Air Force men's swimming and diving team picked up two victories on the first day of the Anteater Shootout, hosted by UC Irvine. The Falcons defeated the host Anteaters, 95-45, and Cal Poly, 85-53, but fell to Hawaii, 94-46.

Sophomore Benjamin Gunn (Gainesville, Ga.) led Air Force with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 butterfly events. Gunn also led a trio of top-five finishers in the 200 backstroke, recording a mark of 1:53.17 to place third. Kai Yamashiro (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) took fourth in the event with a time of 1:54.80, while Tom Hansen (So., Berkeley Heights, N.J.) was fifth with a mark of 1:55.20.

Also recording individual second-place finishes were Sean O'Keefe (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Greg Edmonds (Jr., Fairfax Station, Va.). O'Keefe took second in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:40.84, while Edmonds turned in a second-place performance in the 100 breast with a time of 59.10. Senior Justin Day (Peyton, Colo.) added a third-place showing in the 100 breast, recording a mark of 59.18.

Yamashiro also had the Falcons' top showing in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 51.17, while sophomore Robert Dawson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led Air Force in the 50 free with a mark of 21.36 to finish third.

The Falcons were led by fourth-place finishes in both the 200 free and the 200 breast, as Eric Robinson (So., Lakewood, Colo.) clocked in at 1:45.12 in the 200 free, while Josh Hammervold (So., Sugar Land, Texas) recorded a mark of 2:09.56 in the 200 breast. In addition, O'Keefe and Hansen placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to pace the Falcons in the 1650 freestyle.

In the 100 free, senior captain Bryan Avery (Mililani, Hawaii) turned in the Falcons' top performance, finishing sixth with a mark of 48.04, while Nick Dixon (Sr., Canton, Mich.) was sixth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.68.

Junior David Arlington (Eagle River, Alaska) was Air Force's top diver on Friday, finishing third in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, while classmate Kyle Van Valkenburg (Tucson, Ariz.) was fourth in both events.

Air Force also had solid performances in both relay events, finished second in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

The Falcons complete competition at the Anteater Shootout tomorrow, when they take on Hawaii and MWC rivals BYU and UNLV.
