USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team officially kicked off the 2008 Wing Open with two bouts during the preliminary round of action on Thursday (Feb. 9) in the Upper Boxing Room. Both contests featured 156-pound contenders, vying for a chance to advance to the next round of tournament action.
Both matches featured seniors defeating freshmen in referee-stopped-contests. Ryan Price picked up a victory when the referee stopped his bout with Nick Holland in the third round, while Daryn Nelson earned the win over Cameron Carter with a second-round stoppage. In addition, sophomore John Doeseckle earned a win by forfeit over Martynas Smitas.
"Both bouts were hard fought matches with the more experienced seniors working their way toward the ultimate referee stopped contest," assistant coach Capt Erwin Vargas said following the bouts.
Price was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Using hard body shots and stiff jabs, he was able to stop his opponent with a third-round victory.
Price and Nelson advance to next week's quarterfinal round of action. There will be 11 bouts on Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Upper Boxing Room. Action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
