USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force Academy fencers traveled to Rosemont, Ill., to compete in the North American Cup "E" Division II and III tournament on March 7-10. As one of the largest groups of freshmen that the program has had in the past nine years, the class of 2011 was unable to advance into the top 50 of the NAC tournament this past weekend. Only two freshmen, Curtis Christensen and Lantz Balthazar finished in the top 50 in Division III. Christensen from Los Alamos, N.M., was the Falcons' top performer. Christensen finished 21st among the 147 men's individual foil competitors. AFA's other highest finisher, Balthazar, from Niceville, Fla., finished 44th in men's individual epee.
"This was good experience for our young fencers," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Going up against other Division II and III fencers will help our freshmen prepare for next season. This was good results for Curtis and Lantz."
The NAC "E" tournament continues through Monday, March 10. Division II and III Men's Epee, Women's Foil and Women's Sabre is scheduled for Sunday, March 9. Division II Men's Foil and Division III Women's Saber is scheduled for Monday, March 10.
