Despite impressive wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 6 singles, the Air Force women's tennis team fell to 47th-ranked BYU Thursday at the Academy, 6-1. Junior Christine Abayan and sophomore Erlyn Rudico won the No. 1 doubles match for the Falcons, defeating Dolly Chang and Kristina Doerr, 8-7(2), while freshman Christen Monreal won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2, over Jocelyn Jensen. With the win, BYU improved to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while Air Force fell to 5-16 and 0-4.
Abayan has been a part of both doubles wins against MWC opponents this season as she paired with fellow junior Meghan Kiser to win the No. 2 doubles match against Wyoming on Feb. 3. She also was a part of the last individual victory over BYU when she paired with Kat Bushey to win the No. 1 doubles match against the Cougars during the 2006 season.
Meanwhile, Monreal claimed AFA's first singles victory against BYU since Brooke Parsons won at No. 1 singles in a dual match during the 2002 season. With her victory Thursday, Monreal takes over the team lead with 19 overall singles wins.
BYU took an early 1-0 lead Thursday by winning the other two doubles matches. Jensen and Anastasia Surkova won at No. 2, downing AFA seniors Lauren Wilson and Erika Shortridge, 8-2, while Chie Hayasaka and Elle Carney defeated Kiser and freshman Samantha Sarkis, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot.
Doerr opened up singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Abayan at the No. 1 position, while Hayasaka followed suit with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Wilson at No. 2. Chang then clinched the team match for the Cougars by downing Kiser, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.
Elizaveta Ezhova posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sarkis at No. 4 and Carney beat freshman Katrina Eromin, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot.
The Falcons are back in action on Friday, April 4 when they host 56th-ranked Utah at the Academy. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
