Four AFA Fencers Named MWC Scholar-Athletes

USAF Academy, Colo. - Four members of the Air Force fencing were named recipients of the Mountain West Conference 2007-08 Scholar-Athlete Award as announced by the league office, June 23, 2008. Freshman Curtis Christensen, sophomore Michael O'Connor and juniors Ainsley Allen and Julie Luce were recipients.
Christensen, a native of Los Alamos, N.M., holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.82 in Systems Engineering Management. Christensen is a member of the Falcons' men's epee team. O'Connor from Charlotte, N.C., has a GPA of 3.67 and is majoring in Astronautical Engineering. O'Connor is a two-time all-region in saber. Allen, from Grand Saline, Texas, holds a 3.64 GPA in Mathematical Sciences. Allen competes in women's foil. She has been on the athletics, dean's and superintendent's lists for most of her Academy career. Luce, who has a 3.52 GPA and is majoring in Mathematical Engineering, is from Denton, Texas, competes in women's foil.
The Mountain West Conference announced its 2007-08 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients today. A total of 506 student-athletes were honored, including 20 individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average over two or more terms. Additionally, 41 student-athletes were recognized in multiple sports, bringing the overall number of awards presented to 547.
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
