DENVER, Colo. - With its best team finish since 2006, the Air Force golf team took second place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, hosted by Denver at the 7,239-yard, par-72 Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Paced by a pair of third-place finishers, the Falcons posted a three-round score of 859 (-5).
Air Force's second place finish is its best since capturing the team title at the 2006 Service Academy Golf Classic. It also marks just the third time since 1995 that the Falcons have finished in the top two as a team, outside of the SAGC (which Air Force has won for 12 consecutive years). Meanwhile, the Falcons' team score is the third-lowest tournament score (54-holes) in school history.
Helping Air Force to its impressive showing were junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) and sophomore Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas), who both tied for third place with a 9-under-par 207. Whitney, who fired a 68 in the final round, captured his second top 10 finish of the season, while Bailey, in a personal-best performance, turned in the first top 20 showing of his career. With their mark of 207, Whitney and Bailey tie for third-place in the Air Force record books for lowest individual tournament score.
Senior Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was next in the individual standings for Air Force, tying for 26th place at 219, while senior Andrew Gibson (San Ramon, Calif.), in a tie for 55th place, and freshman Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), tied for 75th, rounded out the group. In addition, Aaron White (So., Hereford, Texas), who tied for 87th place, and Travis Deckert (Fr., Wichita, Kan.), who tied for 90th overall, both competed as individuals.
Colorado outpaced the rest of the field, shooting 39 strokes under par (825) to capture the team title. Meanwhile, the Buffs' Pat Grady earned medalist honors with a score of 204 (-12).
The Falcons return to action next week, Sept. 26-27, when they head to the annual William H. Tucker Invitational, hosted by Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico.
