Alex Jones scored the game's only goal as the Loyola University men's soccer team remained undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Air Force Sunday at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Loyola improved to 3-0-1, while the Falcons fell to 0-3 this season.
Jones took a crossing pass from Malcolm DeBaun and placed a header just over the outstretched arms of Air Force goalie Jim Gullo from 10 yards out with 10:04 remaining in the game. It was one of only three shots on goal for the Ramblers as Jones had another and Michael Ferguson had one as well. Shots were at a premium all day as Air Force only managed three shots on goal as well.
"We played tough defense today but couldn't finish offensively," said Air Force head coach Doug Hill. "Ryan Robinson really shut down one of the top forwards in the country (Ferguson) and Gullo kept us in the game with some great plays."
Junior Kevin Rosser had two of the Falcons' three shots on goal, while fellow junior Steve Noller had the other. Gullo made one save and Jason Dall had a team save for Air Force when he knocked Jones' shot off the goal line in the 60th minute.
Loyola outshot Air Force 12-8 in total shots and had seven corner kicks, compared to two for the Falcons.
Air Force is back in action next Friday, Sept. 12 when it hosts Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
