Air Force Golfers Finish Sixth at Falcon Invitational

Firing its second sub-par round of the weekend on Sunday, the Air Force golf team finished sixth at its own Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, being held at the 7,301-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Course. The Falcons turned in a three-round score of 872 (+8) for the weekend, one of its top-10 best team scores in school history.
Junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) turned in his best round of the tournament on Sunday, firing a 69 in the final round. Leading the way for Air Force in the team's season-opening event, Whitney finished sixth with a total of 212 (-4), which ranks among the top 20 individual scores all-time at the Academy.
Meanwhile, senior Shaun O'Bryant (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also shot a 69 on day two, moving up 28 spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for 12th place at 217 (+1). Sophomore Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas) followed in a tie for 29th place with a score of 220, while Andrew Gibson (Sr., San Ramon, Calif.) and Aaron White (So., Hereford, Texas) finished at 224 and 233, respectively.
The Air Force Silver team also competed in the event, finishing 17th overall. Leading the way for the Silver team was freshman Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), who came in at 228 to tie for 60th place. Also competing for the Silver Team were juniors Peter Guzowski (Tiffin, Ohio) and Alex Horrell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshmen Caleb Leestma (Seabrook, Texas) and Travis Deckert (Wichita, Kan.).
Conference rival Colorado State captured the team trophy at the 40th-annual Falcon Invitational, finishing the weekend with a tournament-record 837 (-27), while the Rams' Bryce Hanstad won medalist honors with a three-round total of 205 (-11).
The Falcons are back in action Sept. 15-16 at the Ron Moore Invitational, hosted by Denver.
