AFA Fencers Michael O'Connor and Peter French win at Amarillo Open

The Academy's saber and epee fencers had a successful weekend competing at the 10th Annual Amarillo Open. Michael O'Connor was the senior mixed saber winner, while Peter French won the senior mixed epee event on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Amarillo, Texas.
In mixed saber, O'Connor, the No. 1 seed, won the gold medal bout, 15-8, against Michael Gallagher from the Colorado Fencing Academy. Teammate Brent Lavey tied for third place and earned his "D" rating in U.S. Fencing Association (USFA) after advancing to the final four. Also tied for third place was Scott Pippin. AFA's Geoffrey Pamerleau took fifth place, while Heather Nelson placed sixth, Edward Wong placed eighth, and Amanda Terry finished in 12th-place. Teammate Anthony Lorenzini finished in 15th place.
French, Nathan Sorensen and Phillip Choy took the top three places in senior mixed epee among the field of 50 fencers. French won the gold medal bout, 15-11; Sorensen took second place, while Choy finished third. Daniel Trapani took fifth place, while Simone Barrette and Mister Jackson finished in eighth and 10th place, respectively. Jackson also earned his "D" rating in USFA. Also competing were Ben Rinaldi who finished in 18th place, Jennifer Nolta finished 34th and Kaitlyn Bogan finished in 49th place.
AFA's only competitor in the senior women's foil event was CJ Jung who finished in third place among seven competitors.
