Falcons Split Pair of Home Matches

The Air Force women's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Academy. In the morning, the Falcons dropped a 6-1 decision to Texas Tech, then rebounded to beat Colorado College, 7-0, in the afternoon. With the split, Air Force is now 3-5 this season.
The Falcons started the day by winning the doubles point against Texas Tech with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Senior Christine Abayan and sophomore Sarah Cassman defeated Kerryn Potgeiter and Simone Templeton, 8-5, at No. 2, while sophomore Christen Monreal and freshman Allie Chermel pulled out a 9-7 victory over Natalie Leitch and Stefanie Peana at No. 3.
Texas Tech responded by winning all six singles matches in straight sets, including Samantha Van der Drift defeating Abayan, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
In the afternoon, Air Force swept all nine matches, losing no more than five games in any match. Chermel moved up to the No. 1 spot and defeated Jordan Evans, 6-2, 6-3. Fellow freshmen Shannon Young and Shelley Johnson each posted her first victory of the spring season. Young won at No. 5 over Erin Yamamoto while Johnson beat Vita Emery at No. 6, both matches were 6-0, 6-1.
The Falcons are back in action next Friday, Feb. 13 with a pair of home matches against Montana (8 a.m.) and Metro State (4 p.m.)
