The 44th-ranked Utah women's tennis team topped Air Force, 6-1, Sunday in Salt Lake City, Utah. With the victory, the Utes improved to 9-6 overall and 3-0 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Falcons fell to 9-11 and 0-3.
The Utes swept the three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan blanked senior Christine Abayan and freshman Allie Chermel, 8-0, at the No. 1 spot. Leigh Walsh and Evgenia Kryuchkova downed sophomores Sarah Cassman and Christen Monreal at the No. 3 spot, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for Utah. Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson won at No. 2, 8-5, over sophomore Katrina Eromin and freshman Shelley Johnson to finish off the sweep.
In singles play, Abayan posted Air Force's lone victory, defeating Walsh, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Cassman won the first set, 6-3, over Kryuchkova at the No. 4 spot before losing the final two sets, 6-0, 7-5. The Utes captured the other four singles matches in straight sets.
The Falcons host a pair of conference matches next weekend at the Academy. They will play UNLV on Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m., then San Diego State on Sunday, April 5 at 9 a.m. Air Force will also host CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at 3 p.m.
