COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After setting an Academy 10K record and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, Air Force senior Sean Houseworth (Carlock, Ill.) was selected as the Mountain West Conference Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (March 31). It is the first weekly honor for Houseworth.
In his first meet since winning a pair of conference titles at the indoor conference championships, Houseworth clocked an Air Force record time of 28:33.71 in the 10,000-meter run at the prestigious Stanford Invitational. Competing against some of the nation's elite distance runners, Houseworth finished eighth collegiately (and 10th overall) in a combined field of over 60.
That time, a personal-best by nearly two minutes, earned Houseworth an automatic entry into the NCAA Championships in June, as he bested the automatic cut by almost 11 seconds. The time of 28:33.71 is currently the fastest in the conference, eighth on the national performance list and fourth all-time in the MWC record book. The 2007 conference champion in that event shattered the Academy's previous record of 29:04.44 that was set in 2005.
