HOW HE GOT THERE
Texas Tanner advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by placing within the top 12 in both the hammer and discus at the NCAA West Prelim. Tanner won the 48-man regional in the hammer throw with a Facility Record throw of 244-4 on May 27, before placing fourth in the discus throw on May 29 behind a toss of 194-5.
HISTORY 101
Thirty-one Falcons have combined for 44 All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while the women earned 24 additional accolades at the NCAA Division II level (1981-96). Jim Murphy (5000-meter run: 1964), Dana Pounds (javelin throw: 2005, 2006) and Mahala Norris (3000-meter steeplechase: 2021) are the Falcons' three DI national champions, while Pounds, Nick Frawley and Sara Neubauer lead the program's DI Record Book with three Outdoor All-America awards each.
TANNER IN THE FIELD
Texas Tanner leads the nation in both the discus and hammer events, heading into the NCAA Championships. He recorded an American Collegiate Record hammer throw distance of 258-9 (No. 2 in NCAA history) at the Beach Invitational on April 17 – one day after recording an NCAA-leading distance of 217-6 in the discus at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. His best discus mark of 228-2 occurred outside of a collegiate meet, at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational, but is No. 2 distance in NCAA history and the best throw by an American-born collegiate athlete.
THEY'RE WATCHING…
Following a strong weekend at the NCAA West Prelim, Texas Tanner remained on the Watch List for The Bowerman Award, as the advisory committee and USTFCCCA announced the Pre-NCAA installment on June 4. Tanner, who became the first-ever Service Academy athlete to be placed on The Bowerman Watch List in May, is the only thrower on the latest update.
