USAFA, Colo. - Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (Sr., La Quinta, Calif.) wraps up a busy summer of competition next week, when he heads to the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship, being held Aug. 24-30 in Tulsa, Okla. Whitney earned his spot in the tournament by finishing third at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying in Boulder, Colo., on Aug. 3.
The first and second rounds of stroke play in the tournament, the premier event in the United States for amateur golfers, are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Southern Hills Country Club and Cedar Ridge Country Club. Following the two rounds of stroke play, the field of 312 golfers will be cut to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play.
All match play rounds (which are 18 holes, with the exception of the final match) will be played at Southern Hills. The first round of match play will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 26, followed by the second and third rounds on Thursday. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Friday and Saturday, respectively, followed by the 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 30.
The U.S. Amateur will mark the second career USGA championship appearance for Whitney, who advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links earlier this summer.
