Air Force Defeats South Dakota State, 23-12

Posting victories at six weight classes, the Air Force wrestling team picked up a 23-12 victory over host South Dakota State Saturday evening at Frost Arena. With the victory, the Falcons improve to 5-7 on the season and 1-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference. Meanwhile, the Jackrabbits fall to 1-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the WWC.
South Dakota State grabbed an early 3-0 lead by winning a close 5-4 decision at 125 pounds, but sophomore Tyler Untrauer (Midwest City, Okla.) put Air Force on top, rolling to a 12-1 major decision over Tyler Johnson at 133 pounds. Freshman Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), ranked 16th in the nation at 141 pounds, added to the Falcons' advantage with a major decision against Dustin Walraven, winning 12-4.
The Jackrabbits won back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to take a 9-8 lead, but Air Force team captain Justin Shadrix (Sr., Bremen, Ga.) put the Falcons back on top with a 9-3 decision over Seth Moe at 165 pounds.
Following a forfeit by SDSU at 174 pounds, Air Force held an 18-9 advantage with three bouts to go. Senior James Ciccone (Mentor, Ohio) came through with a 10-3 decision over David Michaud in the 184-pound match-up, guaranteeing the Falcons at least a tie.
While South Dakota State's Tyler Sorenson won by decision at 197 pounds, Air Force was assured the team victory going into the final bout. With the outcome of the dual already decided, heavyweight Stephen Larson (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) added another tally into the win column for the Falcons, using a third-period takedown to secure a 3-2 decision over Kevin Kelly.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a dual meet at conference rival North Dakota State.
