Falcon Duo Advances to Quarterfinals at Region Championships

Lance Wilhelm and Andy Jackson of the Air Force men's tennis team won two doubles matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2010 USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The pair, seeded ninth at the tournament, will take on the second-seeded team of Thomas Schubert and Spencer Smith of BYU on Friday.
Wilhelm, a sophomore, and Jackson, a freshman, opened the day with an 8-5 victory in the round of 32 over Matt Cowley and Brad Weaver of Mountain West Conference rival Utah, then beat Josh Smith and Andrew Warren of Montana, 8-4 in the round of 16. The only other Falcon doubles team alive in the tournament is freshmen Lucas Marin-Salcedo and Steven Young, who defeated teammates Stephen Katrein and Alex Lineberry, 8-6, in the second round of consolation.
The team had mixed results in singles on Thursday and three Falcons remain in the tournament. Jackson and fellow freshman Alex Grubbs each won his first-round match after getting rained out on Wednesday but fell in the second round. Grubbs lost to Schubert, the tournament's No. 2-seed, 6-0, 6-4, while Jackson lost the 12-seed, Jim Brouleau of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-4. Both will play in the consolation bracket on Friday. Young won his first consolation match on Thursday, defeating Diego Campos of Montana State, 7-5, 6-3.
This event is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
