ANDREWS AFB, Md. - Playing just one round of action, the Air Force golf team was able to hold on for its 14th-straight victory at the Service Academy Golf Classic, held Tuesday at the Courses at Andrews. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the event was shortened to a single round of 18 holes after heavy rain and unplayable course conditions caused the cancellation of play on Monday.
In its single round, Air Force registered a team total of 373 (low five scores), edging out second-place Army by three strokes, while Navy finished third at 379. Also competing was the Merchant Marine Academy, which posted a team score of 571.
Leading the Falcons at the event were freshman Kyle Westmoreland (Katy, Texas) and sophomore Wes Denny (Cincinnati, Ohio) who each carded a 73 (+1) on Tuesday. Also finishing in the top five was junior Caleb Leestma (Seabrook, Texas), who tied for fourth place with a score of 74.
Finishing in the top 10 for the Falcons was freshman Philip Colwell (The Woodlands, Texas), who shot a 76 to tie for ninth place, while junior Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas) finished a stroke behind in a tie for 11th place. Rounding out the competition for Air Force were Kyle Bailey (Sr., Austin, Texas) and Andrew Hoops (So., Highland, Calif.), who both shot a 79 to tie for 16th place.
Earning medalist honors at the event was Army's Anthony Kim, who turned in a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday.
The Falcons return to action next week, Oct. 11-12, when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, for the Purple & Red Invitational, co-hosted by Weber State and Utah.
