Air Force Splits Two Games at Convergence Tournament

Back in action after two weeks off from competition, the Air Force water polo team went 1-1 on the opening day of the Convergence Tournament, being played at Pomona-Pitzer's Haldeman Pool. The Falcons dropped a 9-7 decision to 18th-ranked host Pomona in their first game of the day, while winning an 11-4 contest against Cal Lutheran on Friday evening.
The host Sagehens grabbed a 3-1 lead after one period of action, but the Falcons (4-9, 3-6 in the WWPA) outscored Pomona in each of the next two quarters to tie the game at 6-6 going into the final stanza. However, Pomona-Pitzer won the fourth period to take a 9-7 victory.
Sophomore Cruz Smithson (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) led the Air Force offense against the Sagehens, tallying three goals, while freshman Josh Stedman (Brea, Calif.) added two goals and an assist. Also finding the back of the net in the game for the Falcons were Garrett Womack (So., Redlands, Calif.) and Kurt Wallin (Sr., Temecula, Calif.).
In the evening game against Cal Lutheran, Air Force controlled early and maintained its advantage throughout the contest. After taking a 4-1 lead after one period, the Falcons went up 6-2 at the half and never trailed en route to the 11-4 victory.
Stedman was Air Force's leading scorer against the Kingsmen, registering three goals, while Bobby Geiger (Sr., Buellton, Calif.), Matt Shields (Sr., Gilroy, Calif.) and Taque Patino (Jr., Rockford, Mich.) scored two goals each. Also scoring for the Falcons were Smithson and sophomore Dillon Fisher (Orange, Calif.), while junior goalkeeper Danny Harold (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) registered 10 stops.
The Falcons wrap up action at the Convergence Tournament tomorrow when they face Harvard. The game, which will take place at La Verne, is slated to begin at 11:40 a.m.
