Fencers Competed in the 2010 Junior Olympic Championships

Over the four-day President's holiday weekend, Air Force fencers sophomore Simone Barrette, freshmen Heather Nelson and Nathan Sorensen competed in the 2010 Junior Olympic Championships in Memphis, Tenn. The three fencers finished in the top percentage of their respective events.
In junior women's epee, Barrette had the highest individual finish of the three fencers, as she finished 28th in the field of 172, and besting her 2009 results when she finished 43rd/137. In junior men's epee, Sorensen finished tied for 42nd among the 208 junior epeeists. Nelson, in women's saber, finished 34th in the championships among the field of 111 fencers.
The Championships, with over 1,600 competitors, are the national championships for the junior and cadet fencers in each of the three weapons and were the final domestic competitions in the selection cycle for the Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships.
The Academy fencers will now make ready for the 2010 West Regional Championships, held in San Diego, March 13. The NCAA Fencing Championships follow on March 25-28, in Boston, Mass., hosted by Harvard University.
